Techdirt have an interesting post highlighting some of the dangers of using licenced software and proprietary data formats.

Unfortunately, many people still do not see or care about the issues raised. One of the links to the document highlights an extreme scenario whereby vital medical knowledge of a hospital patient is locked away in a proprietary database and so could be the difference between life and death for the victim.

I am a firm believer in open formats as for one they allow any application of your choice to access data that is rightfully yours and make it impossible for vendor lock-in (legal extortion) to occur. Even if the extreme situation as described above is a little too far fetched, it''s still possible for individuals and companies to have their important data effectively held to ransom by software companies.
